Crawfordjohn

"Out of the world and into Crawfordjohn..."

This may be an old quotation but it is so true.

Set in the midst of moorland and hills, remote and

unexpected, Crawfordjohn has for centuries been

a place to stop and rest. A long day's travel from

anywhere - but on the way to everywhere. - it

has changed very little for centuries. There were

once many inns but now there is only one.

The former Parish Church which was established by monks in mediaeval times, now houses the Crawfordjohn Heritage Venture, a museum of the traditional ways of a remote hill farming area with a good archive of family history records

There are several regular craft days with spinners and basket makers on hand to demonstrate their skills.

The area is ideal for riverside picnics and there is a local hotel. Some local farms welcome B&B guests. The area has several exellent walks, details of which can be found in the museum.

The museum is open each Saturday and Sunday from late April until the end of September - from 2pm to 5pm, and at other times by arrangement.
